Golf Invitational
The first annual Cape Fear Ladies’ Golf Invitational will take place Sept. 25, at 9 a.m., at Stryker Golf Course.

The $60 fee includes coffee, pastry and juice at check-in, green fees, cart and luncheon following play.

The format will be individual gross, with net cash prizes.

Players must have a current United States Golf Association index signed by a pro or include an USGA handicap card with entry form. The index maximum is 40.4.

September 17 will be the deadline for entry, current index card and check (made payable to Cape Fear Ladies’ Golf Invitational and mailed to Barbara Azzarelli, 2810 Welbeck Court, Fayetteville, N.C. 28306).

No refunds after Sept. 20. The field is limited to the first 64 applicants as determined by postmark.

Ryder championship
The 2010 Ryder Club Championship will be held Oct. 9 and 10 at Ryder Golf Course on Normandy Drive.

Entry fee is $35 per player, and does not include cart and green fees.

The tournament will be low gross, including low net scores. It is open to all active-duty, retired military and Department of Defense employees and their dependents age 16 and older. Entrants must have an established handicap or play with a zero handicap.

There will be no preferred pairings. Oct. 9 play will be flighted by handicap with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. Sunday’s play will begin at 9 a.m.

There will be a closest to the pin and longest drive contest each day. The men’s and women’s winner for the closest to the pin contest on Oct. 10 will receive a pair of FootJoy golf shoes.

A keg of beer and soft drinks will be available after play, Oct. 9. A chicken and barbecue dinner with soft drinks and a keg of beer will precede the awards ceremony on Oct. 10.

Trophies and gift certificates will be awarded to the first and second place winners in each flight for both gross and net scores. There will also be a ladies flight.

Football competition
The NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Competition takes place Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. on the Main Post Polo Field. Check in will be at 9 a.m.

The competition is open to youth ages 6 to 15. To be able to participate, proof of age is required and a liability waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian.

Boys and girls to compete separately, with the top scorer in the all boys’ and girls’ age divisions advancing to the sectional competition. No cleats and personal footballs will be allowed.

Registration is ongoing at the youth sports and fitness office, fourth floor of the Soldier Support Center on Normandy Drive.

Pool tournament: Sports U.S.A., (Building 3-2102, Longstreet Road) holds a pool tournament Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m.

Entry fee is $5 per quarter. The tournament is open to the public and features 8-ball rules.
Competitors could win $250 for their playing skills. A cash prize is awarded every three months to the overall winner. Other prizes will be announced for second and third quarterly winners.

Flag football
Intramural Flag Football will take place on Fort Bragg from Sept. 8 to Nov. 18.

Flag football is open to active-duty military assigned or attached to Fort Bragg units.

Games will be played Monday to Thursday, beginning at 6 p.m., at various Fort Bragg fields.

Gym reopens
The Dahl Physical Fitness Center reopened Aug. 15, following a renovation project to replace flooring throughout the facility and to expand the weight room area.  The facility has resumed the normal operating schedule of 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, Sunday, holidays and training holidays. its normal operating schedule of 5 a.m. For more information, call 396-6226.
