Exelis shows appreciation for safety awareness efforts
A million hours sounds like a lot of time and to Exelis Systems Corporation it is not only a lot of time, but also a lot of time spent being safe.
Exelis, is a diversified, top-tier global aerospace, defense and information solutions company that has a contract with Directorate of Public Works to perform logistical services in maintenance transporttation and supply. On Nov. 1, 2011, and again on June 6, Exelis was recognized by the N.C. Department of Labor for accumulating a million employee hours with no loss of time, injuries, or illness is from Dec. 18, 2010, to Aug. 2, 2011.
June 15, in recognition of their achievement, Exelis employees took a break and rewarded its employees for their attention to detail and maintaining excellent safety standards by hosting a pig picking at the Fort Bragg Parade Field.
“It’s wonderful for all of to get back together because whenever our building was damaged we weren’t able to do so anymore,” Angelique Ollins, warehouse specialist. Today just kind of lets us come together again for a good reason.”
Even though the day featured food, door prizes and a surprise visit by McGruff the crime dog, the main emphasis of the day was to give Exelis employees a chance to come together and enjoy their accomplishment.
“The big accomplishment was to get the folks out here and give them a free lunch,” said David Edwards, environmental health safety and security manager. “We wanted them to see some other situations that we do here on Fort Bragg such as fire and rescue and our environmental folks.
Exelis, a company with more than 800 employees, was able to maintain their safety record through the loss of two major work facilities, the Materiel Maintenance Division and Troop Issue Subsistence Activity and damages to other facilities from the April 2011 tornado.
“It starts from the top all the way down to the bottom,” said Edwards “There has to be good leadership, accountability, employee involvement, safety committees and inspections. It is just a whirlwind of things to involve the employees for all of us to come together and realize that our goal is to accept only zero (safety mishaps).”
